My favorites are Kanji (Shrewsbury), Ichiban (Ocean), and Takara (Ocean). Honorable mentions go to Aligado (Hazlet), Sogo (Red Bank), Sushi Bento (Matawan).
I look forward to trying the following places:
Shogun Legends (Wall Township) Oishi (Keyport) Sultan (Matawan)
Please post about your Monmouth County sushi restaurant experiences here.

If you mean Sultan Wok in Matawan (with locations throughout Jersey), then DON'T DO IT. It is the worst sushi place I have ever been to. It's like mall sushi. You've been warned. I also like Takara and Ichiban. What do you think of Sono (Middletown)? I haven't been there in a little while, but I always enjoyed it when I lived in Holmdel. Nicholas from Restaurant Nicholas listed it as his favorite in an article about where chefs eat out. Christine

I didn't realize it was so bad. But, yes, I meant Sultan Wok in Matawan (across the train station). We just got a menu and their selection looks quite large. So it piqued my interest. So you're saying stay far, far away? I also like Takara and Ichiban. What do you think of Sono (Middletown)? I haven't been there in a little while, but I always enjoyed it when I lived in Holmdel. Hey Christine, why don't you sign up for an user name?

Ack! Too much commitment . I'll think about it. I have been reading your Red Bank blog, and you seem like a real foodie, so I will reiterate - Sultan Wok is terrible. I will admit that I have never been to the one in Matawan, but I have ordered from the ones in Long Branch and Highland Park (just to compare). The rolls are not made well, and if the roll has spicy sauce, the odd, gloopy stuff they use is not even in the roll, but given to you in a side container. The rice is not made well, but at least the sashimi is fresh. Do you ever go to the Seoul Market in Eatontown, Rte. 35? I read that your s.o. is Korean (as am I). On the weekends, they offer (as unheated takeout for low prices, cash only), pretty decent Jap Chae, mixins for bibimbap, bulgogi (raw, but marinated), Kim Bap, P'ajon, and various desserts. Their Kimchi is also extremely cheap and good - better taste and prices than the offerings at the asian market in Middletown. Christine

There's only one way to know -- and that is to try. Do you ever go to the Seoul Market in Eatontown, Rte. 35? I read that your s.o. is Korean (as am I). Christine I always wanted to stop in the Seoul Market, but never got around to it! Sounds right up our alley. He loves kimchi, so we're always looking for the good stuff. Thanks for the head's up!
