ROLLER DERBY LEAGUE TO HOST SEASON-ENDING BOUT AND FOOD DRIVE IN
ASBURY PARK SATURDAY, NOV. 29
Local women to offer up exciting skating battle; event is
also a food drive and a `thank you' to armed forces
The exciting world of roller derby will descend upon the Jersey Shore
as two local teams from the Jersey Shore Roller Girls league battle
it out Saturday, Nov. 29 in Asbury Park Convention Hall. The bout is
also a collection point for a food drive to benefit the Food Bank of
Monmouth and Ocean Counties.
The female athletes of the Anchor Assassins and the Murder Beach
Militia teams will serve up the fierce blocks and jams that roller
derby is known for, as Asbury Park's Convention Hall is transformed
into a roller derby rink.
The event marks the final intra-league match-up for the
Jersey Shore Roller Girls 2008 season. The teams have prepared a
night of derby mayhem in a full-length bout where the women don their
derby personas and showcase their skills as skaters hit, dodge and
block to get through the pack and score.
With teams named Anchor Assassins and Murder Beach Militia,
the league took note its bout was military-themed and decided to
honor veterans and current members of the armed forces with a
military discount to the event. Patrons who show a military ID will
receive $5 off the $20 ticket price the day of the show.
The Saturday event doubles as a collection point for local
food bank, The Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. The public
is invited to drop off non-perishable food items to Convention Hall
anytime after 3 p.m. until the final whistle blows. Donors will be
entered into a drawing for a 2009 season pass for all Jersey Shore
Roller Girls home games.
"The Jersey Shore Roller Girls admire many local charities
and chose to help The Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties as
part of our roller derby bout Nov. 29," said Meghan Callahan, a
founder of the Jersey Shore Roller Girls League. "It is important for
each of us to help out our community, and this is one way we can do
that, through a great organization such as the food bank."
Captains for both teams said that with at least three
practices a week at Rollermagic Skating Rink in Jackson, the skaters
have been working hard to prepare for an exciting combat on wheels.
"We know this will be an exciting match, and the Anchor
Assassins are ready for their first win," said Ms. Ciri Ganguzza, the
captain of the Anchor Assassins. Skating as "Ciri L. Killa,"
Ms.Ganguzza leads her team to an exciting face-off against the Murder
Beach Militia, who are also 0-1 against the league's third team, the
Right Coast Rollers.
Captain of the Murder Beach Militia is Theresa Adams, skating
as "Morguetisha Adams." Her team has been practicing hard and is
bringing some new players into the fold, she said. "Murder Beach has
a lot of new girls on its roster, and it is going to be a great
experience and lots of fun. This will be a bout that is full of
excitement," she said.
Advance tickets are on sale now for $15 at
www.jerseyshoreroll ergirls.net for the Saturday Nov. 29 bout. Tickets
are $20 at the door. Children under 12 are admitted free. Doors open
at 7 p.m., the whistle blows at 8 p.m. Adults 21 and over to drink.
The Jersey Shore Roller Girls league consists of three
intra-league teams -- the Murder Beach Militia, the Right Coast
Rollers and the Anchor Assassins -- and one all-star travel team. Its
members -- women of all ages and backgrounds -- fill the Jackson
Skating Center for grueling practices several times weekly, training
and scrimmaging with their coaching and referee staff.
Roller derby is the newest, extreme sport for women
rapidly sweeping the nation. Roller derby has been re-vamped into a
flat-track version of the old-school style of a bank track. This is
the real thing, not an orchestrated match-up. Jersey Shore Roller
Girls, a league which formed just over a year ago, skates under the
Women's Flat Track Derby Association rules and regulations.

Roller Girls league please go to www.jerseyshorerollergirls.net. The
league is always accepting new recruits, and no previous skating
experience is necessary. Anyone interested in being a skater,
