I thought this was just common sense these days. ASBURY PARK — As police investigate a number of overnight car burglaries, they are warning residents to take valuables out of their parked vehicles.
The most recent break-ins occurred between Thursday night and Friday morning at the corner of First Avenue and Comstock Street, on the 1000 block of Second Avenue, and the 600 block of Lake Avenue, said Detective Lt. Mary Bulsiewicz.
A number of other car burglaries have occurred in recent weeks, in the area near the Stone Pony and Convention Hall, she said.
GPS systems and iPods were among the items reported stolen from vehicles whose windows were smashed, Bulsiewicz said.
Police also noted that in some cases, even when GPS systems and their holders were removed from windshields, a mark from the suction cup was left behind, and that mark tipped thieves to the electronics hidden inside the car.
So, they said, drivers may want to use a wet cloth or hand wipe to clean their windshields after removing the systems.
Anyone with information about the break-ins is asked to call police at (732) 774-1300 or the department's tip line at 1-800-799-8280.
