I think the idea of a message board is daunting to a lot of people. It connotates commitment. I understand we're all busy, most of us don't live our lives online. Well, not like me. ;D
I know for a fact there have been an incredible number of unique visitors to this board. While this type of online communication isn't for everybody, I am still disappointed that we only have 11 members. And most have not come back much at all.
I understand why this is not successful...
From the "new user" perspective: "I don't like to sign-up for things; I like to be anonymous" "I can't remember the domain name" "I don't have time to read and chat on-line all day!"
So, while I still believe in message boards, and perhaps this one will take off someday. I'm exploring some other options. In fact, there's something off-putting about ProBoards which is making me lean towards setting up on another message board service.
Additionally, I think I may not focus so much on the message board as I will a new, improved website and create a moderated Yahoo! Group - that way people who want to be active, can "opt-in" and get emails WHEN they want it.
It's an idea floating around in my head.
More later, I'm sure.

Hi Marilyn, I do actually have an account now, but I am too lazy to sign in . I have used many of the different services as a moderator/administrator since 1999. I hated Yahoo! Groups (I was also familiar with them back during Yahoo! Club days). The advertising is overwhelming and distracting and I don't think that they offer many attractive features. It may be a good option though to get a small group going. It becomes really annoying though once the group becomes large and one either receives emails as they come, or in a super long daily digest. I currently use yuku (formerly ezboard). I've been really happy with them for several years, although I host a paid membership forum )and a related web site with information and an application), and use some of that money to pay for an upgraded experience for my members. I agree that part of the problem is the url name, although that is what bookmarks are for, right? Also, maybe there are too many different forums within the board? Maybe you can begin with a smaller focus, like food/restaurants (although many seem to participate on chowhound) or begin a meetup.com group (although those seem a dime a dozen as well)? I like MoCo, but my first desire is not to visit a message board about it on a regular basis unless there is something really drawing me here. What is your long-term goal in having this message board and/or a web site? I give you a lot of credit for at least trying to bring us slackers together ;D. Christine

Yeah, like I said I just have "ideas" floating around in my head. I'm not exactly sure what my long-term goal is at this point. I suppose it could just be as easy as to form a nice community of folks who like to shoot the shit about things local (or not local - depending). I know there needs to be more focus. Which is the question that bounces around in my head - what do I want to focus on? Obviously I love dining out (but, like you said, Chowhound has that covered); I would like to have more a social life than what I currently have. But how realistic is that? I work 50+ hour weeks. I have a house to keep. I have a man and a cat to take care of. It's depressing! lol So I guess I'm looking for something relatively casual, laid back, but fun. So I have been toying around with another, more focused (geographically anyways) website/idea that I call "Bayshore Friends". I looked into starting a meetup.com group but they actually charge you $75 just to start the group and only for six months! So I scratched that idea. "Bayshore Friends" is still in development so to speak; I'm not quite ready for a big reveal or a big promotional push. But you're more than welcome to peek the site I've put together and offer any ideas. bayshorefriends.weebly.com/It's got a long way to go obviously. But it's a start.
